To what extent are you expanding the definition of your KPIs? If you want to measure what matters, it will help to focus on more than measuring the outputs and activities — the “doing” of leadership. You also need to track the “being“ of leadership. Yes, the mindset, presence, interactions and impact that leaders have on others, which influence people and performance.
KPIs for “being” need to look less like today’s productivity dashboards and more like mirrors, reflecting how leaders’ presence, integrity and energy affect and shape the people around them.
With “being” KPIs, we get a fuller and clearer picture of leaders. And leaders receive valuable feedback to apply — especially if you use these “being” KPIs in a constructive, not punitive, manner.
In this article Want to measure what matters? Expand KPIs to include leaders’ ‘being’ side published online Oct. 23, 2025 for the Forbes Coaches Council, I describe 9 possible “being” KPIs. These combine perceptions of the leader as well as observable signals. Realistically, 3 to 5 max to start may work best, especially to start.
