“How often do you think about your thinking?”
For years, I tried to avoid answering this question. It sounded weird and made me uncomfortable.
However, now that I’ve learned more about metacognition in my role as a brain-based coach and Master Neuroplastician, I’ve become a huge advocate for posing this question to myself and others. And it’s also useful to ask whenever you’re working with genAI and practicing hybrid thinking with humans and machines.
This question about thinking is at the heart of metacognition, which is a powerful and learnable skill that benefits us humans in all aspects of our lives. Basically, metacognition is knowing what you know and don’t know about your own thinking processes in the moment. The more aware you are, the more you can detect your cognitive strengths and limitations. And you can protect your advanced skills, such as strategic thinking, when working with genAI.
In this new article, Want to improve your thinking? Use metacognition, for the Forbes Coaches Council published online on March 24, 2026, I explain more about metacognition. The article also includes tips and exercises to help you become better at thinking about your thinking.
